In my opinion, speeches are one of the best things about a wedding!
Hands up if you’ve popped your pound coins into sweepstake pot and taken bets on how long the speeches are going to be…yep me too! You kind of know the order of who speaks first, often father of the bride, then the groom, and the big finale – the best man’s speech! But what if you turned tradition on its head and threw a bridesmaid speech into the mix?
Bridesmaid speeches are becoming more and more popular in the UK. If you search for bridesmaid speeches on Youtube, you will find a lot of American clips as they have been popular for quite some time, but there is an incredible UK one that always comes up in the search. If you haven’t checked out the ‘Maid of Honour Raps her Speech to ‘ICE ICE BABY‘ at her sister’s wedding! AMAZING!’ video on Youtube, you must – it is brilliant!
I’m not saying you have to rap a speech for it to be good though! It may not go with the tone of the wedding, or your friendship for that matter, but it is the perfect opportunity for you to thank the couple for asking you to play an important part of their wedding and to tell some funny stories about the bride.
I was asked to make a speech at my best friend’s wedding last year, along with my two other besties. We were all pretty excited about it and had so much fun writing the speech, reminiscing about all the fun we have had, but then it dawned on us we would actually have to perform this infront of 100 people…then the anxiety kicked in! However, we gathered all the girls up from the hen do and asked them to make as much noise as they could when we walked up on stage, just to get the rest of the crowd going, and it worked! We discovered a newfound confidence, we got some laughs, some aaahs and some ooohs and the speech went down a storm, but more to the point our gorgeous bride loved every moment of it and that’s really all that mattered.
So bridesmaids, take the plunge, grab that prosecco and get up there and tell your bride how much you love her, and maybe throw in a couple of stories about your club 18-30’s holiday… if you’re brave enough!
